Kenya Family Safaris
Duration: 15 Days | 14 Nights
There are many opportunities for families to safari together in East Africa, however this trip is seen as the ultimate ecological, cultural and family experience as no other trip provides such an array of day-to-day activities, which will satisfy every member of a mixed group – whether you are an inquisitive young child, an energetic parent or a grandparent just wanting to relax. All the hotels and lodges featured are extremely child-friendly, with excellent facilities for children, who are entertained by trained naturalists. This allows adults time together to relax into the local surroundings and enjoy the safari. A great adventure for “kids” of all ages!
Your Itinerary:
Day 1 - Arrive Nairobi, Kenya
Arrive into Nairobi where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a welcome rest. (If your flight arrives in the evening, we suggest adding an extra night here to start your program refreshed and ready for adventure) Safari Park Hotel. The history of the Safari Park Hotel - often described as the Eden of Africa - dates back to the independence of Kenya. Then the buildings, occupied by the British Airforce, were converted into a hotel, set in a splendid park conceived by internationally famous landscape gardeners. In 1976, the Paradise Group acquired the hotel, set about a major restoration, and added new buildings. After considerable work, the gala inaugural evening took place in November 1992.
Day 2 - Nairobi (Animal Orphanage/Giraffe Center)
After breakfast, you will visit the Snake Park, Animal Orphanage and the famous Giraffe Center, for a close encounter with the rare Rothschild giraffe. Return to the hotel for a late lunch (own arrangements) and the remainder of the day is at leisure. Safari Park Hotel. Includes: (B).
Day 3 - Nairobi - Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, you are transferred to the airport for your scheduled flight to the Samburu National Reserve. Upon arrival you are met and transferred to your beautiful tented lodge. After lunch embark on an afternoon game drive. Samburu Intrepids. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Perched on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the heart of Samburu National reserve, Samburu Intrepids enjoys a unique perspective of one of Africa’s most celebrated wildernesses. The camp’s location deep inside the reserve guarantees close encounters with the region’s shier wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard, and Samburu’s famous ‘unique five’ - the rare reticulated giraffe, long-necked gerenuk antelope, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, and majestic Beisa Oryx.
Because of the warm climate, Samburu Intrepids’ public areas are all palm-thatched and open to the elements, raised on stilts to catch the cooling breeze blowing off the river. The main dining room has a seating capacity of 60, and opens onto an outdoor dining terrace, where buffet breakfasts and lunches are served overlooking the river. (Meals can also be enjoyed on your private verandah or at one of a series of specially selected 'bush sites’ close to the camp).
Intrepids also boasts a spacious lounge and bar area, where our naturalists deliver fascinating slide shows on most evenings, and an intimate conference room with a television for viewing wildlife documentaries. Behind the bar, surrounded by shady sunbathing areas, is our freeform swimming pool - a soothing drop of blue in this otherwise arid land.
Days 4-5 - Samburu National Reserve
Morning and afternoon activities in Samburu National Reserve. The area is the site of last year’s Survivor hit television show and home to a variety of rare game and is inhabited by hundreds of different bird species. Samburu Intrepids. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 6 - Samburu National Reserve – Rift Valley Lakes
After an early morning game drive and breakfast, you fly back to Nairobi, where you are met by your driver guide and transferred by road to the Great Rift Valley Lodge, arriving in time for lunch. Later, there will be the chance of a guided nature walk through the forest and perhaps a boat ride on the lake. Great Rift Valley Lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7 - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, depart with a picnic lunch to Lake Nakuru National Park for the day. The park is home to thousands of flamingos for much of the year, as well as other birds and plains game animals. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon. Great Rift Valley Lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Perched on the side of the Eburru Escarpment, overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Naivasha and the sweeping floor of the world's largest valley, the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort enjoys one of the most spectacular views in all of Africa. Just one-and-a-half hours' drive from Nairobi (or a 30-minute flight to our own airstrip), the lodge is the perfect stopover on a safari to the Maasai Mara or the sights of western Kenya. As well as Kenya's newest and most stunning championship golf course, the lodge offers exciting walking and horse-riding safaris in the Eburru forests, and mesmerizing “trips back in time” along a string of volcanic lakes with the world's most diverse and concentrated bird life.
The social “heart” of the Rift Valley Lodge is the clubhouse building, which offers fine dining and beautiful views from its panoramic restaurant and broad balconies. Around the clubhouse, the lush fairways and sparkling lakes of the 6,580-yard, 18-hole golf course fan out in different directions, all with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. As well as all the facilities you would expect of a professional golf club, the clubhouse offers a comfortable restaurant, two bars, and a luxurious lounge with a fireplace and satellite television for the use of lodge guests. Visitors can also take advantage of a wide variety of modern sports facilities, including a driving range and practice greens, two tennis courts, and a freeform swimming pool, as well as comprehensive corporate facilities, including three conference rooms and a business center.
The Great Rift Valley Lodge offers 21 twin and 9 double rooms, all with private balconies overlooking the spectacular valley floor. The rooms are located in spacious two- and three-story blocks, and are beautifully furnished with large four-poster beds, handmade wooden furniture, African prints, and modern en suite bathrooms. Several of the rooms have interlinking doors that convert them into spacious family suites.
Day 8 - Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, you drive to the Naivasha Ebony Curio Emporium, the largest of its kind in the world, where one can watch expert craftsmen working. It is fascinating! This is where the countries best work can be purchased at factory prices. Then from here, continue on to Nairobi, for lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant, which offers game meat such as gazelle, zebra, giraffe and crocodile, as well as the more traditional fare. After lunch, you connect with the flight to the Maasai Mara National Reserve where you are met by the team from Mara Intrepids Tented Lodge and transferred to camp. Here, tents are spread along the river, where hippo and other animals can be seen regularly and ensure privacy and peace. Each tent is furnished in the classic style, with many having large four-poster beds and handsome reproduction furniture offset by modern en suite bathrooms with hot showers, flush toilets and all modern amenities. There will be an afternoon game drive around the Mara River, which is a short drive from camp. Mara Intrepids Lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 9-10 - Maasai Mara National Reserve
Morning and afternoon activities in Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Maasai Mara is world famous for big game. Together with the adjoining Serengeti it is one of the only places in the world where it is still possible to see vast herds of grazing animals. And attracted by those huge herds, the predators - Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and more. However, a visit to the Mara is not only about seeing the "Big 5," it's also home to a wide variety of birds.
